[NASCAR] Thoughts on racing back to the S/F on the final lap
This week at the DHL 400 (Michigan Spring 2004), Kasey Kahne was desperately chasing Ryan Newman on the last lap to get his first win. A caution came out due to PJ Jones' terrible wreck in turn 2, and the race fans didn't get to see a dramatic finish (allegedly). Darrell Waltrip opined form the ivory press box that NASCAR needs to revise the rules (again) to allow racing back to the S/F line on the last lap and give the fans what they want.
The last thing NASCAR needs is another tweaking of the rules. They struggle to administer the rules they have in place now. If this wreck had happened closer to the front of the field and racing back to the line was still allowed, the results could have been disastrous. The rule stopping racing back to the caution was one of the smarter things NASCAR has done recently.
