The Flee From Attrition (TM) Continues
First, thoughts and prayers go to the Hendrick Motorsports folks and the racing community on the tragic loss yesterday.
With four races remaining, Kurt Busch is 95 points ahead of his next closest competitor Jeff Gordon and 125 point ahead of third place bandwagon navigator Dale Earnhardt Junior.
If Kurt Busch has one more good race, and based on his experience at places like Atlanta he probably will, Jr and Gordon will see their chances fade a lot more. One hundred points is hard to overcome in three races

Robbie Gordon is really stinking the place up. It seemed like he was involved in every other wreck this weekend. That's not a good way to end your tenure at RCR when you're looking for another ride. I used to be a big supporter of Robbie, but he's lost a lot of my support lately.
The unfortunate plane crash this weekend overshadowed this WWE moment. (Registration required). Here's the snippet.
Nice!

Rusty Wallace bumped teammate Ryan Newman after the race to show his displeasure over a lap 493 incident between the two that dropped Wallace from second place to 10th while Newman took third.
"I told [Newman] to stay out of my way and I could win the race, but he didn't do it," Wallace said.
Newman's reply: "I don't guess Rusty and I are on speaking terms right now. I was underneath him, and I know he came down on me. I wasn't going to give him anything, so he got loose and lost a bunch of spots.
"Our car was faster than his at the end. I'm not sure he's aware of that, but he will be."
Nice!

A few brief comments:
1.) Perhaps my memory is faulty, but IIRC Ricky Hendrick retired from racing because he decided there was a safer way of making a living… Yet another terrible tragedy in this great sport.
2.) The gear dropping out of Ironhead Jr's car was a nice visual of his hopes of a championship bouncing down the backstretch of Martinsville. A fitting end to a lousy day.
3.) Nice work by NBC showing Martin politely asking Burton's spotters to request that he move over. "Please ask Jeff to move over and let me by, I don't want to have to use my bumper". Note that Burton finished one place ahead of Martin. I don’t know if Mark used the chrome horn or not, NBC didn't bother to follow-up on that one...
4.) I was unsure how to take the interchange between Newman and Wallace. First, this was one of those rare occasions when I was actually rooting for Wallace, and was disappointed that another guy ruined his day. However, the comment from Newman has me perplexed. Is Newman implying that Penske is going to step in and take sides, or that Rusty is a level headed guy and will calm down when he sees the lap times? Again, hard to figure the context of the comments. I was originally a fan of Newman, but I think he needs to mellow out a bit. The guy, IMHO, has a lot of accidents happening around him. Maybe he is related to Dale Sr… At a minimum, his bumping of Rusty resulted in a tenth place finish as opposed to a third place finish. I don't blame Rusty for being pissed. Especially coming from your own teammate
