Why I love Nextel Cup Racing
Although I am a religious reader of Jayski, due to time constraints I seldom have the opportunity to actually sit down and watch a race. In the past few years, this affliction was offset by me listening to most races on MRN. Unfortunately at the first of this year, our local MRN affiliate changed radio formats to Air America and dropped MRN -- go figure! Certainly not all NASCAR fans are conservatives, but you can bet your ass that most Air America fans are not NASCAR fans!
Back to my point, I had the opportunity to watch the last 30 laps of the Darlington race. Wow, what a race. Just when you think Ryan Newman is going to run away with it, Mark Martin decides to do a whoop-dee-do and avoid backing the 6 into the wall. What a awesome piece of driving. Being a technoid, watching the different strategies play out was just awesome. Newman was a sitting duck, he was screwed if he pitted and screwed if he stayed out. After the green flag dropped, Edwards had to throw it a bit of extra excitement, and Biffle completed the brilliant strategy. Now I haven't exactly jumped on the Biffle bandwagon. The thought of him in that big-ol-cowboy hat and shooting cap guns after the Texas race is reason enough to be a bit skeptical of the Biffle bandwagon. Regardless, I am a huge fan of Jack Roush, and am always pleased to see one of his drivers win a race. On paper, I should like Ryan Newman, being an engineer and all. But, for some reason, I just haven't fully embraced his "persona". Perhaps it has something to do with his long running feud with Krusty. I'm also note a huge fan of Rusty, but I think a bit of respect from his garage mate seems in order -- but then again, us Gen-Xers supposedly have problems with "authority figures"… So, as far as I'm concerned, Newman not winning is just fine with me!
Well it's on to one of my all time favorite tracks, and another night race no less. Maybe I'll get to watch the last 30 laps again.
